Thank you

Thank you Baby Einstein, you saved me this evening. During dinner prep, my very fussy 1 1/2 year old went from constantly whining and crying to happy, content and excited about the animals on the farm and singing on the tv. I forgot that I used to let Jenna have her tv time during dinner prep all those years ago. It offered sanity, peace, and safety then, and it does the same now as I type.

Special words from Jenna

We were painting together this evening and Jenna was saying, "mom, we can share these colors, and you can even mix the colors, I don't mind at all, it's just fine with me" and so I said to her...

Me: Jenna, you are just about the sweetest little girl I have ever met.

Jenna: Thanks. My sweet comes from God.

In no particular order

Seven of my favorite (recent) things...

1. The girls playing "together," at this point in life that means doing the same thing at the same time and not being selfish toward each other.

2. Jenna being creative and enjoying each day.
3. Elsie's sweet sleeping position.
4. The girls again enjoying time together, and Jenna choosing her own style!
5. Little hints of sunshine (even in the freezing cold) reminding us of spring to come!
6. Snuggle time with Daddy.
7. Elsie's big blue innocent eyes, adorable cheeks, and crazy hair.

California

Our trip to California was great. It was a good time with Eric's family, the funeral for his grandma was very nice, and the whole trip went well. Beware, TONS of pictures to follow...

On the plane, very early in the morning. We were separated by an aisle,
me and the girls on one side, Eric on the other. The girls did so well on the
flight, and everyone was so nice to us! It was a great start to a long (but good) day.

Right when we got there, we went for naps at Aunt Pam and Uncle Tim's (and Alison's) and then got ready for the funeral. The girls were so excited to see Poppy! Elsie hasn't seen him in person for over a year (we see them on ichat often - so it's like she watches movies with Mimi and Poppy as the star all the time), and she kept looking at him, suspiciously, like he was a movie star or something :)

This is at the graveside. Elsie and I were in the car (she fell asleep on the short drive from the funeral home to the graveside - see next picture) so I didn't hear what was said, but from what I am told, it was very special for the whole family.

And then to the beach. Sigh. It was beautiful, warm, so very lovely.

Jenna and cousin Alison. Alison was able to convince
Jenna to put her toes in the ocean! Quite impressive!

I am pretty sure that Mim and Poppy enjoyed their grandbabies :)

Across the street from our hotel in Monterey was the Dennis The Menace Park. It was amazing, tons of play structures one for every age range, a ridiculously long bridge, rock walls, sand, an old train to explore, a maze leading to another play structure, and much more! Here's Jenna with Dennis.

Elsie LOVED the slide...
AND the swing. It was cute to watch her attempt the slide on her own!

And lastly, the flight home. A beautiful sunset, and two amazing little girls who did great even with little sleep and constant activity. It was a great time together.

Swagbucks again

Well, I have to tell you that this Swagbucks thing is awesome! I have been doing it for about a week and I already have enough points to get a $5 gift card to Starbucks or Amazon.com, or lots of other fun gift cards! So, I highly suggest that you sign up and use it whenever you do your google searches. It uses google to search, but this way you get rewarded to do it! Click here and enjoy some free coffee!

Also, I have been hesitating to update my blog with the California pictures for two reasons. 1. My template is all snow and these pictures are of Monterey, 80 degrees beautiful. and 2. I found a new template that I like but I am afraid to do it because last time I accidently deleted all my links. So, I will have hubby do it when he gets home :) Soon I will be back to posting. I have lots to share!

Cleaning up

Yesterday a group of amazing friends came and helped us do some cleanup, and take the tree off our house. Everyone worked so hard and we are incredibly thankful for all the help. Thank you Greg and Judi for bringing your trailer and working like crazy for hours. Thank you to Bryan, Brandon S, Brandon G, and Ryan for all muscle power and brain power. Thanks also to Jenne, Faith, Heidi, and Alison for staying home with your kids while your husbands helped us out. Thank you thank you thank you so very much!

Okay, so here are some pictures - this is the front yard now. There is still a lot of stuff out there but if you compare it to the picture in the last post you will see just how much progress was made! That tree made for a lot of debris!

Wow huh. I was a little nervous to have my hubby up there on the roof with a chainsaw. But all the help around him made me feel a lot better. And he did a grand job! (Cool picture!)

This was actually the most nerve wracking part. They had to take this huge branch off somehow without it going through the window that was just to the right. They tied a rope around the branch (that is what Eric is doing), cut a V in one side, chain-sawed through the rest of the way, and pulled like crazy to make it fall without crashing through the window (or falling on someone!)
Eric worked more today, and we will continue to work for a while to finish up. I can't imagine how long it would have taken without the help of friends. Thanks so much. Also if anyone needs some firewood, let us know!!

(I will be posting about our trip sometime soon.)

Our minor disaster

As some of you have heard, we came home from California to find two fallen trees in our yard. Here are some pictures of the craziness.

This is the cherry tree in the backyard. It is leaning on the house, we are not sure if there is damage to the roof or gutters yet, but we are assuming so. We are thankful that it didn't go through any windows or damage the side of the house.

And this is the front yard before (this picture taken May of 2007 after we put in some new plants and pretty bark dust.) The tree that fell is the huge one in the right corner.

And here is the after photos. The tree fell into the street, so the city workers came and chopped it up and put everything in our front yard. Crazy.

Wow huh.

7 updates

1. For Christmas I received a wonderful gift from my parents - a 6 month membership at our local gym! (No, I didn't take offense, they know how much I love working out). Anyways, I have really enjoyed adding that aspect back into my daily routine. The kids love the child care they provide, I love the outlet, but I AM SO SORE!!

2. We are heading down south for a funeral on Thursday. Eric's Grandma died a few days ago. She was 80 years old. And days before she passed away she finally trusted in the Lord so we are confident that she is pain free in Heaven with Jesus! Pretty amazing.

3. My resolutions are going well. All except one. The no sweets has officially been tossed out the window, at least for this month. I took on a few too many things January 1st and decided I needed to give myself a little slack somewhere (I'm eating a small piece of chocolate as I type this.)

4. Did I mention that I am SO SORE!! I tried a new class at the gym and, wow, it worked me over!

5. Elsie is pretty much walking. She's been able to walk for about a month but chosen not to. The crawl was such a fast mode of transportation! She walks with this wide stance and it always ends in a running dash the the closest support around.

6. Jenna is precious. She's at a sweet stage, she is obeying well and loving to learn and learning to love others. We are reading longer books together and talking a little more about life (as much as you can when you are 3 1/2). I know what I want for our relationship and times like these show me that we are heading in a good direction.

7. Elsie is talking more and more each day. She has added words like, "baby, woof, pretty, and ya" to her vocabulary. I love that she says, "ya" - makes me feel like we are having conversations. Eg. "Good morning Elsie, it's still dark outside" "Ya." "Should I turn on some lights?" "Ya." Do you want some breakfast?" "Ya." "A banana?" "NANA!"

I guess that is it. Sorry my blog has been boring lately. I have lots on my mind, and plenty to blog about, but no desire to do so. I noticed Faith said the same thing on her blog a few days ago :) Hopefully I will be back to it, and I will have lots to share after our trip to California.

Swagbucks

I'm trying out a new thing called Swagbucks. It is a site that rewards you with "bucks" for searching, purchasing online, etc. Then you can trade in the bucks for gift cards. I'm not sure how well it will work, but I have heard good things. Has anyone else out there tried this?

Walking/Crawling

Elsie is starting to walk more and more each day, but still prefers to crawl, or to bear crawl. Here's a quick video of her progress...

Lalala

Elsie LOVES singing into the mic, just like her big sister. And Jenna makes up another song...

Three Resolutions

I made two resolutions for this New Year...

1. Bible Read through with hubby.
2. Drink right amount of water each day (1/2 of body weight in ounces).

and two side resolutions...
3. Exercise 3 times per week.
4. Sweets only once a week.

There you have it. The bottom two are probably going to be a little more flexible but I still wanted to say them out loud.

We had a WONDERFUL new year, celebrating at my sister's house East Coast time so all the kiddos could be with us. I forgot my camera but maybe someone out there could email me some pictures of the festivities!?!?

Happy New Year! Did anyone else make any resolutions they want to share?
